That was a close one…. 2

Car Accident
It was just like any other day, wakes up, make my breakfast — one egg, two sausages, and a glass of milk. Eat said breakfast, brush my teeth, wash my face, grab my books, drive to school… that’s when it happened.

Somewhere out there 3

The hit song “Somwhere Out There” is a song by James Horner, (best known for his Academy award win for best original score for Titanic, as well as best original song for “My Heart will Go On”) Barry Mann, and Cynthia Weil. The song was written specifically for the movie An American Tail in 1986. It was the first music video to ever target and promote to the adult audience for a children’s film. The music in the movie depicted two siblings longing for each other, while the pop version sang by Linda Linda Ronstadt and James Ingram, depicted the persona as two lovers. The song went on to win two Grammy’s award, as well as an Oscar nomination.

Say “No” to starting classes two days early. 3

The University of Guelph board of undergraduate studies are sure causing quite a stir on campus with their recent proposal to start classes two days early. The proposed schedule would have school start on the Thursday of the Orientation week, and leaving two “reading days” for student at the end of the fall semester to study before the commencement of exams on the following Monday. This change has been proposed to address the lost classes on Thanksgiving Monday (currently 3000 students are registered in Monday Night classes). Starting earlier would allow these classes to be made up on the final Thursday of the semester and also give Friday as an additional study day for all students.

Several pros has been mentioned about the proposed schedule — More time to study for finals, and the ability for upper year students to get some administrative chores that presents itself at the beginning of the semester out of the way — but that’s the extent of the pros.

中秋節快樂 | Happy Mid-Autumn / Moon Festival 2

Ahh, it’s that time of the year again, where millions of people gather with family, and watch the moonlight, digesting moon-cakes and grapefruits (Citrus grandis, to be exact), and telling age-old stories.

I was mighty surprised today however, when only one of my friends who celebrated Mid-Autumn / Moon festival knew the history and stories behind the four thousand years old holiday. “Happy Mid-Autumn / Moon festival!” they would say, “Enjoy those moon-cakes!” But seriously, does anyone know why we gather on this day to view the moon? What about the other activities besides staring at the moon and stuffing your face with moon-cake?

A new beginning 5

You can say I’ve practically have waiting for this all my life. I finally have my very own website, not to mention a blog running on a proper system. I’ve came a long way (or short, depending on how you look at it) since my tripod/geocity and Spymac days.

The design, of course, is going to change completely once I get my head around the WP system, read up on some handy-dandy PHP and other fun coding/database books. Until then, I’m sticking with the default WordPress theme. This will be quite a fun and challenging project for me. The fact that I’m now paying for the domain and hosting will hopefully also keep me working till completion, which as we all know from a web-developer’s point of view, is never.

Those of you that followed along my older blogs know that I like to name them with some of my favourite jazz numbers. This one is no exception. “Let’s Face the Music and Dance” was written by Irvin Berlin for the 1936 film Follow the Fleet. Since then, the track has been covered by famous jazz musicians such as Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat “King” Cole, and Tony Benette. The version I have uploaded is by Diana Krall in her 1999 album When I Look in Your Eyes under Impulse! Records. Produced by Dave Foster, Tommy LiPuma, and Johnny Mandel, the album ended up winning two Grammy’s including best engineered album in non-classical, as well as best jazz vocal. Lyrics after the jump.
