我很好 ⁰

劉若英 (Rene Liu) is a Taiwanese Singer, who I thought was actually more successful in the field of film and television. She entered California State University after her high-school graduation to complete her Bachelor of music with specialization in Piano. After returning to Taiwan in 1991, Rene was hired by Rock Records of Taiwan (滾石唱片), there she worked as assistant and song writers, until she was cast to play in 少女小漁 and 我的美麗與哀愁 in 1995. Her role won her a best actress award at the Federation of Motion Picture Producers in Asia Pacific, and subsequently raised her status to stardom.

The only music I could recall off the top of my head by Rene is 後來 (After) in her 2000 album 我等你 (I’ll Wait for You). This unfamiliarity could be because of her presence in Hong Kong instead of Taiwan, and the fact that she’s heavily into works in films instead of music.

Nevertheless, her latest album, 我很好 (I’m Fine) is quite a beautiful album. The album-titled song is a lovely ballet about how she’s “fine” after a break-up. If there was one thing I could change about this piece, is the balance between back-up vocals, which at some point seems to overpower her vocal.

The other tracks contains your usual melancholic love-songs (I’m still waiting for the day when Asian artists sings about something else OTHER than love/relationships/breakups), including one about run-away-brides in 落跑新娘, which, translates to Run-away Bride. But alas, she saves the best for last, the beautiful duet 不能跟情人說的話 (Words That Can’t Be Spoken to Lovers) with 范瑋琪 (Fan Fan), which sings about friendships and support when it comes to heartbreaks (Nope, just can’t get away from the subject of love/relationships/breakups). Unfortunately, this song also appeared in 范瑋琪’s album just a few months earlier, making this just a rehash of old material.

I’m Fine you could say, is a musical attempt at “chicken-soup for the broken hearted” — something you listen to when you want to wallow up after a big fight with your girlfriend/boyfriend, and it achieves that quite beautifully, but just like the book, you tend to throw it onto the bottom shelf and forget about it for a long, long time.
